The annual Rippey alumni party will be Saturday, May 28, at noon. The meal will be cooked and served by Chef Kevin and his crew of willing helpers! Please call Mary Ann Miller at 1-515-465-2449 for reservations by May 23. The check to Kevin Hick for the meal can be paid at the door. There will be a short business meeting after the meal and a time for visiting. Verdina Hastings is the presiding officer.
Memorial Day in Rippey: The Kinkead-Martin Legion Post #583 of Rippey will conduct Memorial Day ceremonies at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery on Sunday, May 29, at noon after their church services. On Memorial Day, they will be at the Fairview Cemetery after the 9 am services at the church near Perry. They will be at the Angus Cemetery at 10 am, Old Rippey Cemetery at 10:30 am, and conclude the services at the Rippey Cemetery at 11 am. There will be a lunch served at the Rippey United Methodist Church following services.

Rippey Lions met May 19: Rippey Lions Club members held their regular meeting on May 19 and enjoyed the meal prepared and served by Mary Hick and Brenda Muir. Following the meal, a short business meeting was led by president Dick Bardole.
The Lions Club will host “Food and Fun” in Osborn Park on July 9 with a free meal and activities for young and old.
There were 10 people sharing in the bingo activities at the Rippey library hosted by Myron and Maralynn Rinker. The schedule for 2016-17 was discussed including spaghetti meal on Nov. 12, the annual banquet will be on April 1 and finalized after checking with school calendars.
Dick Bardole introduced the speaker for the evening. Tom Wind spoke on renewable energy: wind and solar. He shared the background of wind generators across the country and in Iowa with the first wind turbines in Iowa in 1992. There are now more than 100 wind farms in our state, including the ones in Greene County. He noted that 30 percent of Iowa electricity is produced by 3,600 wind turbines in our state. He also commented on the solar power that is in place at the new Grand Junction Community Building.
The next meeting will be on June 3. Members will bring meat to grill and a dish to share. There will be a summer break with the first fall meeting on Sept. 1.
Washington Winners 4-H: The Washington Winners 4-H Club met May 15 at the Rippey Methodist Church. During the meeting they discussed that if you haven’t done FSQA testing or training yet you need to contact Kayla at the Extension office.
Communication Day is scheduled for June 27 and Share the Fun deadline is June 15. The final beef project meeting is June 7 at the Iowa State University Meats Lab. If you haven’t attended a beef project meeting yet you MUST attend this one to be able to show at fair. If you want to nominate any elders for the Hall of Fame, nominations are due by May 27. Reminder: record books are due by Sept. 1. The state 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl is June 7. The State Fair 4-H premium book is now available. The 4-H CSI: Crops Summer Internships are available for college students.
All breeding beef exhibitors need to make sure their breeding heifers have a tattoo for county and state fair.
The new static exhibit classes are Digital Photography, and MY 4-H: A Special Photography Exhibit. (These are explained in the newsletter.) The new livestock classes are the Beef- Slick Sheer, Pet Show, Beef- Herd Builder, Cattle Kids, Birds and Bunnies, Clover Kids for Poultry, Birds and Bunnies Clover Kids for Rabbits, Sheep- Home bred, and raised Commercial Ewe, and Market Lambs. (These are also explained in the newsletter.)
The last indoor horse meeting is on May 19 at 7 pm at the Extension office. In order to show horses you must attend one indoor and three outdoor meetings. There will be a Horsemanship Clinic offered on May 21 and 22 in Dallas Center.
On July 13 at 5:30 pm there is going to be a Swine Clinic held at the fairgrounds.
The next Shooting Sports meeting will be on May 19 at 5 pm at the Extension office.
There will be a couple of State Summer Camps offered like the STEM Survival Camp, Science Explorers Camp, and 2016 Design Camp. The Iowa 4-H Youth Conference is on June 28-30; registration deadline is June 1.
Dog obedience is every Sunday at 4 pm at the fairgrounds.
The Omaha Zoo Trip is June 3-4.
Make sure that you attend five club meetings so that you are able to participate in the County Fair.
If you want to walk in the Bell Tower Festival parade contact Kayla; she needs 10-12 4-H members.

News around Rippey: Phil and Toni Roberts traveled to Winterset to see their granddaughters Josie and Addie Burkett play in a soccer match between Winterset and North Polk. Their U-12 team consisting of 5th and 6th grade girls played an exciting game with one member pulling off a “hat trick” to win the match 3-1.
Jean Borgeson returned home from visiting with Blake and Linda Hampton and their children, Sierra, Sophia, and Jayden, in Chandler, AZ. While there, she attended the Mother’s Day Tea, the concert of Disney songs, and Pre-school graduation. The children provided much entertainment for this grandma and it is always amazing how fast the little ones grow and learn with each visit.
